With the art project picidae two artist has broke through the so called «Great Firewall of China». The Internet Censorship in China is used by the government to withhold information from the world wide web. The project involves a technical solution to undergo the text censorship by using images of websites instead of text. The user enters the website he wants to look at on one of the picidae web servers like: http://pici.picidae.net/ and is able to look at the website without withheld information. Das Kunstprojekt picidae
Beim Surfen im Internet wird die Welt zum Dorf. Die fremdesten Regionen sind nur ein Klick entfernt. Doch beim genauen Betrachten entdecken wir: die endlosen, virtuellen Weiten existieren nur scheinbar. Warum gibt es keine einzige Webseite aus Nord Korea? Keine Internetseiten zum Tiananmen-Massaker aus China? Keine rechtsradikalen Parolen aus Deutschland, keine Pin-Up’s aus dem Iran, keine Islamkritik aus Saudi Arabien, kein Demonstrationsaufruf aus Syrien?

Das World Wide Web, Nervensystem simultaner Kommunikation und weltweiten Datenaustauschs, ist ein heterogenes Gebilde. Viele Länder kennen Formen der aktiven Internetzensur. Behörden, Provider und Internetdienste überwachen, kontrollieren und blockieren. Das Internet ist unterschiedlich ausgeprägt: bereinigt, beschnitten, fragmentiert. Was ist das also für eine Welt, die sich auf unserem Bildschirm zeigt?

Surfing the Internet and the world shrinks to the size of a village. The farthest regions are just one click away. But taking a closer look, the infinite freedom of a virtual space is just an illusion. Why does not even one single website from North Korea exist? Why isn’t there a website about the Tiananmen Massacre from within China, no right wing extremist propaganda from Germany, not one single Pin-Up girl from Iran, no criticism of Islam from Saudi Arabia, no call for a protest rally from Syria?

The World Wide Web, the nervous system of a simultaneous communication and the platform for global data exchange, is quite a diverse heterogeneous formation. Many nations have an active Internet censorship. Government, Internet providers and Internet Services are observing, controlling and even blocking content. Therefore the Internet appears in different forms: tidied up, and in other ways trimmed or fragmented. So what’s about this world that appears on our computer monitors?
